1. Why driving is especially hard on the back

Sitting is sitting, yet driving tires the back more than desk work — several things stack up at once:

Unbroken sitting. Lights, traffic, the highway — the lower back holds one fixed curve for a long stretch while its supporting muscles stay switched on.
Constant vibration. Bumps and road texture send small jolts upward non-stop, and the body tenses almost imperceptibly to stay stable.
Leaning to one side. A lot of people rest one hand on the wheel and let the other drape down or onto the console; the upper body quietly tilts, and the lower back compensates to keep things level.
The right foot in the air. Holding the throttle with a hovering right foot keeps the right side of the pelvis and the flanking muscles quietly engaged the whole time.

2. How to set the seat so the back tires less

You don't need a new seat — just set the one you have right:

Seat height so knees sit roughly level with hips. Too high and the thighs hang, the butt slides forward; too low and the knees ride above the hips and the back curls. Level knees and hips let the pelvis sit flattest.
Backrest neither bolt-upright nor fully reclined. A slight recline of about 100–110° lets the back rest against the whole panel, spreading the load instead of pinning it on the tailbone.
Bring the wheel a little closer. Elbows slightly bent at the wheel means the shoulders don't have to reach forward — reach too far and the upper back and lower back both pitch in.
Keep both hands on the wheel. The "nine-and-three" or "ten-and-two" grip is symmetric, so the body doesn't drift to one side.

3. A towel is a travel lumbar support

Most car seats put their lumbar bulge lower and shallower than a human back wants. The easy fix: roll a hand towel into a log about a fist thick and lay it across the hollow of your lower back. It does exactly one thing — nudges the lower back forward a little so the spine keeps its natural curve, instead of collapsing into the seat.

The key word is "lightly" — the towel supports the soft tissue and the natural curve behind the waist, not the spine itself. Too thick and it digs in; roll it a bit thinner and it's fine.

One test for any lumbar support

Sit in, take both hands off the wheel for a few seconds, and notice whether the lower back feels "held but not poked." Pain means it's pressing the wrong spot or too hard — that's not support, it's pressure.

4. What to do at a red light or a rest stop

You can't fidget while moving, but the stopped moments are a chance to give the back a break:

At a red light, draw the belly in and release. Pull gently inward, hold two seconds, let go; a few rounds lets the flanking muscles step down from constant effort.
Alternate lifting the heels. While parked, raise and lower each heel in turn; the calves take a little of the pelvis's load so the back isn't carrying all of it.
On a long drive, stop once an hour. At a rest stop, walk a few dozen steps and stand to gently extend the lower back (hands on hips, belly forward, only within a pain-free range).

5. The moment you step out

A lot of back trouble actually shows up at the exit — after an hour of stillness the back is stiff, yet people twist their whole torso to grab things and swing out the door. Do it in order: switch off, plant both feet, turn the whole body toward the door side, then push up with the legs — don't rotate the spine while standing. That twist-and-stand combo is one of the hardest on the lower back.

6. The often-missed detail: your shoes

The body is a kinetic chain: plant the feet well and force transfers cleanly, so knees, hips and back don't overspend to compensate. Driving in slide-off slippers or flimsy flat sandals lets the foot roll inward (pronate) without you noticing; that tiny tilt travels up through knee and hip until the lower back covers for it. A well-fitting, flat-soled shoe often helps more directly than any lumbar pad.

7. Two things worth noticing

Is it worst right when you stop and step out? If sitting is fine but the stiffness peaks at the stop or the exit, it's mostly about the seat and that rotating dismount — adjusting both usually makes a difference.
Is one side clearly tighter? Favoring the same foot on the pedal and the same arm on the console tightens one side of the back over time. Noticing the left-right difference is a useful self-clue.
