One thing first: this is for understanding, not a substitute for seeing a doctor, and it is not a diagnosis. If you are on medication or under regular care, please don't stop or change that based on what you read here. For any health concern, see a licensed medical professional first.

1. Massage helps — but pain isn't the meter

A moderate massage relaxes muscle tension, supports local circulation and helps recovery from fatigue — genuinely useful for everyday relief. The trouble starts with the idea that "pain means it's working." A pleasant ache and the looseness after, versus "gritting-your-teeth pain," are not the same thing. What actually helps is usually the right spot with the right amount of force — not pressing someone until they cry out.

2. Too much force, and the body reacts first

When the stimulus exceeds what the body can take, what shows up first is usually not "effectiveness" but a cascade of acute reactions: the heartbeat turns irregular, breathing quickens, cold sweat breaks out, and in severe cases a person may go pale and faint — occasionally even into shock. None of these are "just push through it" matters; they are the body sounding an alarm.

3. Four common risks of deep, heavy pressure

Repeated deep pressure on an obvious sore spot, or hard kneading around the neck and joints, can lead to these over time:

Muscle and fascia strain. Too much force, even at the mild end, can leave tiny tears in the muscle and the fascia that wraps it — sore and swollen afterward, and slower to recover than before.
The neck and deep vessels need extra care. If the neck or deep vessels are kneaded hard, plaque on the vessel wall can tear loose and travel to block a brain vessel, causing a sudden loss of blood flow — in serious cases life-threatening. This is why the back of the neck and the paths of the large arteries should never be pressed hard.
Long-term force can stiffen tissue. An already-injured muscle pressed hard again and again keeps getting "repaired" by the body, and over time that tends toward fibrosis — tissue that should be soft turns stiff and less mobile. The aim was to relax it; instead it gets tighter.
Nerve and bone risks. Hard pressure at certain spots can compress a nerve, bringing numbness, weakness or radiating pain. For older adults with lower bone density, too much force can injure bone — even break it — or shift and damage a joint.

Why we don't use "pain" as the gauge

You may wonder how we then decide on force. The answer is "not by pain." On a visit we spend the first 10–15 minutes assessing — where the tightness starts, which spots to avoid. The force used is preset and can be pulled back, not floating with the day's feel. The sore spot is usually the result, not the start — press only there and it returns in a few days. Using "does it hurt" as the gauge is both uncomfortable and unsafe.

4. When to check with a physician first

Massage isn't for everyone in the same way. In the situations below, it's worth asking a physician before deciding whether and how to proceed:

Check before any session: those on medication that affects blood clotting, with lower bone density, who are pregnant, or who've had recent neck discomfort or unexplained headaches — ask a physician first.
After a session, see a doctor promptly if: numbness or weakness you genuinely can't work around (an arm that won't lift, objects dropping), blurred vision or slurred speech, one-sided weakness, chest tightness or severe headache, dizziness that won't settle. These aren't the "normal" response to being pressed — they're the body asking for help.

None of this is to scare you off massage — it's to take "force" seriously. Comfortable relaxation is worth pursuing, but "the more pain the better" was never the standard. The sore spot is usually the result, not the start; see where it comes from first, then talk about how to ease it. That's the steady way.

If you'd like to find where it actually starts

Book a session. What we do isn't massage — it's American-style chiropractic bodywork: we spend 10–15 minutes finding where it starts, then talk about how to ease it; the force is set, not judged by pain. By appointment only, one person at a time, never rushed.
